The San Bernardino Mountain community has been celebrating the Christmas Season. Crestline started the festivities with a tree lighting ceremony November 27. They sang Christmas carols, had a preacher give a message, and then had a boat parade where the boats were decorated with Christmas lights. Also, an old fashioned fire truck brought the big man from the North Pole. This is just one example of our celebration of Christmas here in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Mountain Biking in the San Bernardino Mountains

There are mountain biking trails all throughout the San Bernardino Mountains from Lake Silverwood to Big Bear and beyond. There are many trails and you may even ride on some of the ski slopes on mountain bikes in the summer.

My son and I went for a nice ride today on a trail that went along Big Bear Lake. It was a nice sunny day, even though down the hill it was cloudy. It was a nice ride and a lot of fun. Afterwards we went into town and had a nice lunch at a local restaurant. A great way to spend the day.

Lake Gregory

It was a fun day today down at the lake. The Lake Gregory Yacht Club sponsored a race for kids. The kids, many who were 'sailing' for the first time, learned how to sail the boats. Then they had three races. The parents also had a great time watching their children sail the boats and meeting the members of the LGYC. It was a nice day, the sun was out, with a few clouds out to make for a pretty scene.

There are many different kinds of birds that inhabit our area of the San Bernardino National Forest. Many water fowl swim at our lakes. There are birds from chickadees to bald eagles and many inbetween. If you like to go birding, then the San Bernardino Mountains have some interesting birds for you to see.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

It is a beautiful day in the SB Mountains. I have been waiting for a nice day for over a month. What should I do. Maybe go for a walk around Lake Gregory. Maybe go into town and go to Toni's Mexican Restaurant or the A Burger. Maybe go visit the shops at Lake Arrowhead and drink coffee while watching boats out on the lake. Many possibilities.

Filming at Lake Gregory

We watched as they filmed an episode of Sole Survivor today at Lake Gregory. The episode will be shown on March 25 on the Discovery Channel. It features a huge explosion. My family heard a big explosion, and they knew it must be from the filming of this episode. So, when I got home from work we drove to the site. We have a film of the big explosion but I wasn't able to upload it onto this blog for some reason. We also saw them shooting a scene with an actor/stuntman surviving what appears to be a plane crash. The man had to pretend he was on fire and was playing the part with his shirt off, and it was pretty cold out. He did a great job acting under difficult conditions. There is always something going on in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Snow

Here in the San Bernardino Mountains we have had a lot of snow this winter. There have been several storms this year dumping large amounts of the white stuff. There are many things to do up here in the snow. You can build a snowman, sled, ski, there are even people who snowshoe and cross country ski.

Where are the Squirrels?

Where are all the Squirrels in the San Bernardino Mountains? Those of us living in the San Bernardino Mountains have been wondering. We loved our squirrels. They lived, ate, and played all around our houses in our oak trees. On some days they would drop acorn remains on your head from above and one would swear they were trying to hit you. But all the same we love these furry little monkeys of North America. However, they are gone for the most part. We don't see any around our house anymore.

One theory of why they are gone is that the West Nile virus killed them. The virus spread from the west to the east and is wiping out the squirrels. It is a sad time for us living in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Snowing in Crestline

It is snowing, raining, and windy up here in the San Bernardino Mountains. Yesterday on the way home from work I barely made it home in a 4WD truck. At one point I got stuck in the snow. Finally I got out. Then I barely got home by taking an alterate route home. I only made it by following the tracks of another car. Why had they not snowplowed yet. I don't live on a totally out of the way street. It had snowed for two days and no snow plows. There are people on our street who own snowplows and could have cleared our street, but they were told they couldn't. So we wait for the government plows to come. In the mean time I couldn't go to work today.
